Porcelain Tile Cleaning, Coating and Sealing

Many tiles, including some of those made from porcelain, are comprised of a layer of glass added to the surface (in a process called glazing) to protect the tile’s body (technically referred to as the biscuit) from staining and damage.

Because porcelain is strong, durable, and non-porous (meaning, it does not easily absorb liquids), they do not necessarily need a layer of protection from glazing. This advantage is normally leveraged where the porcelain tile is polished to some level of shininess from the lightest finish to the highest shine that’s normally referred to as the “polished porcelain.”

While porcelain tiles are virtually non-porous, they almost always contain microscopic bubbles under their surfaces. These bubbles can get opened and develop as tiny cups on the surface of the tile during polishing.

Regular cleaning does not normally wash the liquid out of the cups, making the tile appear stained. But the bubbles and the liquid out of the cups can be removed with the right and regular washing, but can be avoided altogether with the correct application of the proper sealing solution of the porcelain tile.
